Operation AJAX, and the Begining of the National Security State Operation AJAX was a CIA covert operation, launched in the summer of 1953, to oust the Iranian Prime Minister Mossedegh. The operation was a joint venture between the British SIS and the United States through the CIA, State Department, and Department of Defense, launched in reaction to Mossedegh’s nationalization of the Iranian Oil in 1951, and his perceived closeness to the Tudeh Party, one of many communist or socialist parties in Iran, and by default the USSR (Mossedegh’s own party was the National Front). On August 19th, the CIA, headed by Kermit Roosevelt (Teddy Roosevelt’s grandson), was successful in staging a military coup against Mossedegh, and replaced him with a US and UK approved General Zahedi (The Shah was not installed by the coup but rather strengthen by it.) Operation AJAX, represents more than a single foreign policy decision, but rather a paradigm shift away from democracy, congressional oversight, and transparency of government, toward secret policy and covert actions carried out by the executive branch and the national security apparatus. The plot to overthrow the Mossedegh government in Iran originated within the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), and in the fall of 1952, SIS meet with CIA’s Near East and Africa Division (NEA) representatives in Washington.
